Don Tapscott: Stablecoins are expected to become global currencies, promoting the development of the value internet.
Conversation with Blockchain Industry Expert Don Tapscott: Stablecoins May Become a Global Currency
Canadian entrepreneur Don Tapscott, a leading authority in the digital economy and Blockchain field, recently gave an exclusive interview at the Blockchain conference in the Financial District. Despite being in his seventies, Don remains active at the forefront of the Blockchain industry, continuously writing books, giving speeches, and advancing Blockchain projects through his research institute.
Don is not an extreme supporter of Bitcoin; he is more optimistic about the prospects of stablecoins in commercial applications and the globalization of currency, believing that stablecoins are likely to facilitate a global currency. This view is also supported by data - the usage of the stablecoin USDT in the payment sector has reached 30%.
Regarding whether China's central bank digital currency DCEP can become a global currency, Don holds a reserved attitude. He is more in favor of the global cryptocurrency concept proposed by Bank of England Governor Mark Carney. Don believes that central banks need tools to enhance the transparency of economic operations to cope with large economic crises.
In terms of regulatory attitude, Don has been relatively objective. He criticized the government's strict regulatory approach to blockchain with tokens, but also opposed the radical view that "central banks should not get involved in blockchain." Don pointed out that both the United States and Canada face similar issues in blockchain regulation, and excessive regulation is hindering industry development.
Regarding the future of Blockchain, Don is neither pessimistic nor optimistic. He believes that Blockchain will not eradicate all problems, but it gives us an opportunity to improve the current situation. Compared to the "revolutionary optimism" of many practitioners, Don leans more towards a rational optimistic attitude, affirming the industry's prospects while also respecting the existing system. This may be the mindset that Blockchain practitioners should learn.
Don emphasized that promoting the development of Blockchain requires the participation of multiple parties, including the government, private sector, and civil society. His research institute is focusing on the transformation of 14 industries by Blockchain, including supply chain, finance, manufacturing, media, energy, and more. Don stated that the information internet has brought benefits but has also led to some problems, while the value internet gives us another opportunity to improve everything. He will continue to dedicate himself to realizing this vision.
