Cheng Ran's cross-border art piece "The Miracle #555" sold for a high price of $144,000.
The work "Self-Miracle #555" created by contemporary Chinese image and cross-media artist Cheng Ran in collaboration with application science artist Sun Bohan recently sold for $144,000 at a digital art auction. This piece is part of the "Self-Miracle" series, which is inspired by Cheng Ran's 9-hour long film "Miracle Quest" created in 2015.
The "Miracle" series made its debut at an exhibition in Seoul, South Korea, in September 2024. This generative art project represents an innovation in Cheng Ran's artistic creation, where he collaborated with Sun Bohan to explore the application of algorithms and generative coding technology in art. They deconstructed the temporal elements from films and regenerated them, restoring the images to their simplest forms, patterns, and color domains, breaking traditional temporal boundaries and constructing a new temporal landscape.
Cheng Ran was born in China in 1981 and completed the artist-in-residence program at the Dutch National Academy of Art. He focuses on new media art creation, with works primarily including video and film. Cheng Ran's works often revolve around unsolvable issues in life, such as identity and death. He has received multiple "Best Video Artist" awards, and his works have been exhibited in several internationally renowned art institutions.
Sun Bohan, born in 1992 in China, is an applied science artist and curator. He is dedicated to promoting the exchange and cooperation of art and technology culture between the East and the West, focusing on the integration of technology, algorithms, artificial intelligence, and art. Sun Bohan has curated several important exhibitions, including the world's first large-scale offline crypto art exhibition and China's first large-scale generative art exhibition.
It is worth mentioning that another work by Sun Bohan, "Neural Drift," was sold at the same auction for $13,200. This is an interactive NFT artwork that combines dynamic effects of neural networks and internet culture, capable of real-time adjustments to its visual display based on the staking conditions of specific cryptocurrencies, reflecting the ever-changing nature of the cryptocurrency market and its cultural impact.
The successful auction of "Miracle #555" not only showcases the potential of generative art in the contemporary art market but also reflects the artists' exploration and innovation with new technologies. This cross-disciplinary collaboration opens up new possibilities for artistic creation, allowing viewers to experience the fluidity of time and memory in a completely new way.
