Coincheck Discontinues Handling of Cryptoasset MKR - Following BitTrade | CoinDesk JAPAN
The cryptoasset exchange Coincheck announced on August 8 that it will discontinue the handling of cryptoasset Maker (MKR) on September 8, 2025.
As a result of a comprehensive examination of the project's sustainability and other factors, it has been determined that stable service provision is difficult.
The service will be gradually suspended, with external deposits and accumulation services ceasing on August 21. Subsequently, on August 28, trading at the sales office and lending cryptoassets services will no longer be available. Finally, external remittances will also be stopped as of September 8, and the handling will be completely terminated.
Users are recommended to sell by August 28, when trading will be suspended, or to transfer externally by September 8, when remittance will be suspended. If MKR is held after the deadline, Coincheck will sell on behalf of the users and reflect the amount in Japanese yen in their accounts.
Note that BitTrade has suspended trading at the MKR sales office as of August 6.
The background leading to the decision to discontinue such handling includes "invisible costs" on the exchange side, such as regulatory compliance, system operation, and audit fees. The details are explained in the following related articles based on an interview with the CFO of Coincheck.
