The Hong Kong Monetary Authority issued an important announcement on August 8, warning the public about a new type of scam that has recently emerged: criminals are impersonating the HKMA's logo to distribute false stablecoin sales flyers. This behavior is not only highly deceptive but may also pose significant risks to investors.

The Monetary Authority took this opportunity to reiterate the core requirements of the "Stablecoin Regulation." The regulation officially took effect on August 1, clearly stating that the sale of stablecoins must be conducted through specific licensed providers. These providers include licensed stablecoin issuers, Class 1 regulated activity license holders approved by the Securities and Futures Commission, virtual asset trading platforms, banks, and licensed issuers of stored value payment instruments. It is noteworthy that virtual asset over-the-counter trading institutions are currently not included in the category of licensed providers.

The Monetary Authority particularly emphasized that investors who choose to purchase unregulated stablecoins through unregulated channels will face unpredictable risks, which must be borne by the investors themselves. This warning aims to remind the public to act cautiously when making investments related to stablecoins and to choose legitimate and compliant channels to protect their own interests.

This announcement reflects the ongoing attention of Hong Kong regulators to the virtual asset market and the high importance placed on investor protection. As stablecoins play an increasingly important role in the global financial system, relevant regulatory measures are continuously being improved. Investors should closely monitor regulatory developments, enhance their risk awareness, and comply with laws when participating in virtual asset investments to ensure the safety of their funds and market stability.
